SharePoint Customer Auditing Process

SharePoint Customer Auditing Process

Auditing SharePoint is one of the indispensable processes before deploying new solutions on the existing farm since SharePoint is going to be more critical to the corporate business. There are many reasons why auditing before SharePoint deployments is really important:
  • dentifying things are properly configured in SharePoint farm
  • Identifying the impaction of hardware and software on SharePoint performance
  • Measuring security in several different aspects
  • Infrastructure involved to operate SharePoint
  • Customization maintenance

The wheel describes several parts you need to look at when conducting a SharePoint audit. This whitepaper has been written by 5 SharePoint MVP.

Microsoft Office 365 Deployment Readiness Tool / OnRamp for Office 365

http://community.office365.com/en-us/forums/183/t/2285.aspx

OnRamp

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj993929.aspx

Run automatic checks to test your environment to make sure it’s ready for Office 365. No changes are made and no data is stored while these checks are being run. Be sure that you’re running the checks from a domain-joined computer in your on-premises environment. To run all the tests, you must have the necessary credentials and your workstation has to meet all the requirements. They are checked before the tests run. If your computer does not meet all the requirements, you can follow the provided links to install needed components.

We recommend that you also run automatic checks again after completing the items in the Readiness steps. These checks detect any errors, such as missing DNS records or Active Directory users that need to be fixed before you set up directory synchronization. It’s important to note that OnRamp checks are run against your on-premises environment, so DNS checks will verify internal resolution. Also, OnRamp will look at all of your Active Directory domains. You may see auto check failures for domains that you won’t be using in Office 365. Those failures can be safely ignored.

Microsoft Online Services Diagnostics and Logging (MOSDAL) Support Toolkit

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=626

The Microsoft Online Services Diagnostics and Logging (MOSDAL) Support Toolkit performs network diagnostics and collects system configuration, network configuration, and logging information for applications that are used to connect to Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS-S) or to Microsoft Office 365. The logs and diagnostic information that the tool generates provide data that helps technical support professionals troubleshoot configuration, network, installation, and other service-related issues. The MOSDAL Support Toolkit collects log files, registry keys, and configuration settings that would otherwise require time-consuming and labor-intensive collection by using separate tools.

SharePoint Admin Dashboard

Easy to insal a WSP (I try it for you)https://spdash.codeplex.com/releases/view/45433

Project Description Easily compare server configuration.

"Grid" layout shows configuration of the full farm in one table.

Export to Excel for filter, sort, and pivot chart.

Benefits

Features

  • Do admin tasks faster
  • Scale up beyond RDP
  • Add new servers without fear
  • Verify consistent configuration
  • New WSP format
  • Central Admin > Monitoring > SPDash easy navigation
  • View server config data in table format
  • Export to Excel
  • Timer job refreshes data cache of XML files
  • Wide screen layout for SharePoint 2013
  • Automatic hive (14/15) detection for SP2010/2013 support

Data Sources

  • WMI query
  • Global Assembly Cache
  • IIS web.config
  • Logical disk size and space
  • File versions (to confirm patching)
  • Display Local Administrator members
  • Kerberos SPN for all managed accounts and farm machines

Background

SharePoint farms have many servers with various services, applications, traffic patterns, and purposes.

Having "grid" scripts like the below sample screen-shots can save lots of time. What's a "grid"? Simple.

I wanted to build a real-time Excel spreadsheet to display ALL configuration without RDP.

RDP won't scale. While great for 1-2 servers, it's awful for 10+ servers.

Having confidence in your configs and knowing everything is 100% consistent are BIG steps forward for most admins.

Dynamic Website Activation in IIS 8.5 and Limitation 100

By Gary Ericson July 11, 2013

In IIS 8.5, when there are a large number of configured sites (100 or greater, by default), the service will not activate any of the sites when the service is started.
Dynamic website activation is only available in IIS 8.5.

Problem

When the Internet Information Services (IIS) on Windows Server 2012 service starts at system boot-up, it automatically activates all configured websites. This means that the first time any site is accessed, it will be available and respond quickly. However, for a system with a large number of sites configured, it not only takes a lot of time and resources to activate all those sites at once, but the sites can use a large amount of memory. If the majority of the sites are accessed infrequently, this can be an unneccesary waste of system resources.

Note that "activation", in this context, refers to a process in which IIS registers a site with the HTTP protocol stack (HTTP.SYS), which is part of the Windows Server operating system. This activation is not to be confused with the action of creating a worker-process for a site.

Solution

In IIS 8.5, when there are a large number of configured sites (100 or greater, by default), the service will not activate any of the sites when the service is started. Instead, IIS will activate each site only when it receives the first request for the site. This reduces the amount of system resources required by IIS, especially if a large number of the sites are accessed infrequently. The first request to the site will take some time as the site is activated, but subsequent accesses will respond normally.

Step by Step Instructions

Configure Dynamic Website Activation

By default, IIS 8.5 uses a threshold of 100 sites:

  • If there are less than 100 sites configured, then IIS will activate all sites at start-up.
  • If there are 100 or more sites configured, then IIS will activate each site as it is accessed the first time.

You can change this threshold value by using the Configuration Editor.

  1. Open IIS Manager.
  2. Select the server in the Connections pane, and then double-click Configuration Editor.
    Select Configuration Editor
  3. Select the section system.applicationHost/webLimits.
    Select webLimits
  4. Set the value of dynamicRegistrationThreshold to the new threshold value (the default value is 100).
    Set dynamicRegistrationThreshold
  5. Restart IIS.

Summary

In this guide, you have modified the threshold value used by IIS to determine the threshold over which the dynamic site activation features is effective.

This new TLG uses a fictional Microsoft account and company and the on-premises base configuration test lab to set up a working trail subscription for Office 365 ProPlus, which includes Exchange Online, Lync Online, and SharePoint Online.

Hey TLG and Office Server 2013 fans,

Cloud products like Office 365 and Windows Azure have gotten a lot of attention recently as organizations see the savings of time and money they can offer. As a result, we’ve begun to publish new Test Lab Guides (TLGs) that set you on course to understand how cloud workloads can fit with your existing environment.

For example, we recently published Configuring the Windows Server 2012 Base Configuration Test Lab for Public Cloud Technologies to show you how to set up an on-premises environment that’s ready for public cloud integration.

Now, we’ve built on this TLG with another that shows you how to set up a trial Office 365 subscription: Configuring an Office 365 Trial Subscription. This new TLG uses a fictional Microsoft account and company and the on-premises base configuration test lab to set up a working trail subscription for Office 365 ProPlus, which includes Exchange Online, Lync Online, and SharePoint Online.

If you are evaluating Office 365 or Office 365 ProPlus for your business, take a look at this new TLG and give it a try. Note that this trial subscription is based on a fictional account and company and should not be used to Fast Track to a pilot or production configuration of Office 365.

Learn how to govern applications for SharePoint 2013 by creating a customization policy and understanding the app model, branding, and life-cycle management.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn531035.aspx

How will you manage the applications that are developed for your environment? What customizations do you allow in your applications, and what are your processes for managing those applications?

For effective and manageable applications, your organization should consider the following:

    • Customization policy   SharePoint 2013 includes customizable features and capabilities that span multiple product areas, such as business intelligence, forms, workflow, and content management. Customization can introduce risks to the stability, maintenance, and security of the environment. To support customization while controlling its scope, you should develop a customization policy.

    • Life-cycle management   Follow best practices to manage applications and keep your environments in sync.

    • Branding   If you are designing an information architecture and a set of sites to use across an organization, consider including branding in your governance plan. A formal set of branding policies helps ensure that sites consistently use enterprise imagery, fonts, themes, and other design elements.

    • Solutions or apps for SharePoint?   Decide whether a solution or an app for SharePoint would be the best choice for specific customizations.

Get developer guidance about customizing and branding SharePoint 2013 on MSDN: Build sites for SharePoint 2013.

    Customization policy

Determine the types of customizations you want to allow and how to manage them. Your customization policy should include:

    • Service-level descriptions   What are the parameters for supporting and managing customizations in your environments? See Service-level agreements.

    • Guidelines for updating customizations   How do you manage changes to customizations, and how do you roll out those changes to your environments? Consider ways to manage source code, such as a source control system and standards for documenting the code.

    • Processes for analyzing   How do you understand whether a particular customization is working well in your environment, or how do you decide which ones to create, change, or retire?

    • Approved tools for customization   Consider development standards, such as coding best practices and the tools that you will to use across your organization. For example, you should decide whether to allow the use of SharePoint Designer 2013 and Design Manager, and specify which site elements can be customized and by whom.

    • Process for piloting and testing customizations   How do you test and deploy customizations? How many people should be in a pilot testing group? What are your standards for testing and validating customizations?

    • Who is responsible for ongoing support   Who will be responsible for supporting customizations in your environments—individual teams or a central group?

    • Guidelines for packaging and deploying customizations   Do you have individual packages for each, or do you include several in a feature or solution? Which customizations should be apps for SharePoint instead of solutions? How do you ensure that customizations in one environment do not affect the rest of your SharePoint implementation?

    • Specific policies regarding each potential type of customization   What types of customizations do you allow?

For more information about kinds of customizations and their potential risks, see the Customizations table later in this article. For more information about processes for managing customizations, see the white paper SharePoint Products and Technologies customization policy. Most of this content still applies to SharePoint 2013.

    • Policies around using the App Catalog and SharePoint Store Which apps for SharePoint do you want to make available to your organization? Can users purchase apps directly? See Solutions or apps for SharePoint? later in this article for more information.

    Test Lab Guides

    Table of Contents

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1262.test-lab-guides.aspx#Troubleshooting_TLGs

Test Lab Guides (TLGs) allow you to get valuable hands-on experience with new products and technologies using a pre-defined and tested methodology that results in a working configuration. When you use a TLG to create a test lab, instructions define what servers to create, how to configure the operating systems and system services, and how to install and configure any additional products or technologies. A TLG experience enables you to see all of the components and the configuration steps on both the front-end and back-end that are required for a product or technology or for a multi-product or technology solution.

A challenge in creating useful TLGs is to enable their reusability and extensibility. Because creating a test lab can represent a significant investment of time and resources, your ability to reuse and extend the work required to create test labs is important. An ideal test lab environment would enable you to create a basic lab configuration, save that configuration, and then build out multiple test lab scenarios in the future by starting with the base configuration.

For a test lab based on physical computers, you can image the drives for future test labs. For a test lab based on virtual machines, you can create snapshots for future test labs. This allows you to easily return to a desired configuration for further learning and experimentation.

    Base Configuration TLG

The Base Configuration TLG (overview video ) allows you to create the base configuration test lab, upon which you can build test labs based on other TLGs from Microsoft, test lab extensions in the TechNet Wiki, or a test lab of your own design that can include Microsoft or non-Microsoft products. This base configuration test lab uses computers running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 and consists of two subnets: the Corpnet subnet that hosts the Contoso Corporation intranet and the Internet subnet that simultates the Internet.
The following figure show the base configuration test lab with the Corpnet (required and consisting of the DC1, APP1, and CLIENT1 computers) and Internet (optional and consisting of the EDGE1 and INET1 computers) subnets. When both the Corpnet and Internet subnets are configured, the CLIENT1 computer can be moved between the subnets to show intranet and Internet behaviors and functionality.

The base configuration TLG is just the beginning of the test lab experience. Other TLGs, test lab extensions, or TLG mini-modules focus on Microsoft products or platform technologies, but all of them use the Base Configuration TLG as a starting point.

After configuring the computers of the base configuration test lab, make sure that you perform a disk image on each computer if you are using physical computers, or perform virtual machine snapshots if you are using virtual machines.
For a base configuration test lab that consists of just the Corpnet subnet and is connected to your production network, allowing scalability and ongoing access to the Internet for public cloud technologies, see Configuring the Corpnet Subnet of the Base Configuration Test Lab for Public Cloud Technologies.
For a base configuration test lab that uses computers running Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, see Test Lab Guide: Windows Server 2012 Base Configuration (overview video ). For a list of other TLGs that use this base configuration, see Windows Server 2012 Test Lab Guides.
For a base configuration test lab that uses computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview and Windows 8.1 Preview, see Test Lab Guide: Base Configuration TLG for Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview .

    Governance Services for SharePoint®
